Step Outside

The Flocking Murmuration

While remaining faithful to the band's core indie-folk-rock sound, TFM's wide-ranging 2nd EP branches out into soaring country rock, epic hardcore jams reminiscent of their dynamic stage shows, disco-tinged dance numbers and dreamy acoustic balladry.

While remaining faithful to the band's core indie-folk-rock sound, TFM's wide-ranging 2nd EP branches out into soaring country rock, epic hardcore jams reminiscent of their dynamic stage shows, disco-tinged dance numbers and dreamy acoustic balladry.

While their eponymous debut was in-your-face, sweaty, close-up and somewhat claustrophobic in its intensity, "Step Outside" is more of a Great Outdoors affair, contemplating the vast expanses of Time and Space. It kicks off with "Cara" a Johnny Cash-meets-Guns n' Roses number that attempts to "roll all the world's goodbyes into one song," according to the band.

This is followed by the upbeat, dancing title track ranging from swirling psychedelia to disco and back again. Fingerpicking love song "A Heart and Tears a-Plenty" is track number 3 - gradually building to a pulsating finale - before the bopping mystical rocker "The Ultimate".

As the record builds momentum, the band moves from the metaphysical to the physical: an epic version of the band's classic live showpiece "Dark Matter" which grooves and jams and thrashes until eventually tamed by the sea-shanty-esque curiosity, "Pathosphere".

And, just as it seems we have reached the lilting end, the closing piece fades gently into view: a stomping reprise of the title track has one last go at reminding us all to get up, stand up, and Step Outside.

Dark Matter (Radio Edit)

The Flocking Murmuration

The 2nd single from TFM's 2nd EP fades out before the epic jam of the full album version - but not before a rollercoaster ride that vacillates between modal folk, multi-layered vocals, jazzy tongue-in-cheek breaks and heavy grunge riffs...and back again.

The 2nd single from TFM's 2nd EP fades out before the epic jam of the full album version - but not before a rollercoaster ride that vacillates between modal folk, multi-layered vocals, jazzy tongue-in-cheek breaks and heavy grunge riffs...and back again.

Vocalist Dan Shaw ponders the weight at the heart of his universe and finally decides - via some existential riddling - what to do about it.

The Geordie

Daniel M. P. Shaw

The 7th 2017 album of new songs from the singer-songwriter who has committed to writing a song a day for the whole year! Check them out, be part of this unique and exciting adventure, with 50% of all proceeds going to various worthy charities.

Daniel M. P. Shaw is an established singer-songwriter mixing different musical styles and traditions, but with a folky element to most things he does. In addition to his solo career, he is a member of indie folk rock band, The Flocking Murmuration and formerly a member of world-pop-folk trio Tiger the Lion.

On 1st January 2017, Dan set himself a challenge - to write a song every day for a whole year. This album is the seventh collection of those songs - days 66 to 75 of the "A Song, A Day, A Year" project. It includes new additions to his ongoing suite of personal 'heart songs' , an ode to Chuck Berry (Mr. Rock n Roll himself), a punky folk-rocker that refuses to say "goodbye," but most of all it offers the first bunch of rough-and-ready recordings of Dan's collaboration with his own late Great-Great-Grandfather, Richard Scott, known in his lifetime as "The Blacksmith Poet of Tyneside" who wrote mostly in local dialect: "The Geordie" . 50% of all proceeds go to a variety of worthy causes. This is that song: swinging English-Frech bilingual folk; a guitar and indian tabla, recorded in the wooden cabins of the baths normally used as saunas.

Small Enough

The Flocking Murmuration

This second single from TFM's first album builds gradually, almost imperceptibly from a confident shuffle to a brooding anxiety that through the soaring catharsis of Pink Floyd-esque slide instrumentals finally resolves to fight onward, upward.

Gordie Down (Radio Edit)

Daniel M. P. Shaw

Dan wrote "Gordie Down" after first hearing the news of Canadian icon Gordon Downie's diagnosis with terminal brain cancer. A lifelong fan of the Hip, GD was a major influence on this European singer-songwriter of rough-and-ready folk-pop songs.

Dan is a British-Swiss singer-songwriter who performs solo and as part of the indie folk-rock band, The Flocking Murmuration. He was also previously part of the world-pop-folk trio Tiger the Lion.

As a solo artist, Dan plays rough-and-ready modern folk-pop songs in the tradition of Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Gordon Downie, Neil Young and Johnny Cash.

On 1st January 2017, Dan set himself the challenge to write and share a song every day for the whole year. This project is called "A Song, A Day, A Year". These songs are recorded as one-shot "live" demos.

"A Song, A Day, A Year" is like a daily invitation into a songwriter's workshop.

Dan believes that music can change minds and unite. Songs can raise awareness and provide support - to individuals, organisations and issues that matter.

When you buy, stream or watch Dan's music or videos, a significant percentage of the money will go directly to an important cause linked to that song. For more information on the songs and causes, explore this site, or contact us.

Why not buy a song today, or watch a video, contributing to a worthy cause?
